Unable to Create Patch

I have distributed single file setups using Install Aware X2.
I need to send out some patches that will replace a few file in the users Program Files (X86)\MySoftware folder.
I downloaded and tried out the tutorial, "Using InstallAware 7 to Patch Software Products"
I have two problems
1) When I tried to run the patch to change out the data file (after running the first setup created), I got an error message as follows:
MySample installation failed: "". Please check your settings and try again.
In my project, I checked Always Cache Setup Sources (not highlighted but checked)
I created the setup with the Web Deploy button as per instructions.
Could this be a security setting on my computer that is preventing this from running? The installation works for both my version 1 and version 2. I'm not sure what to do next.
2) Even if this runs, it doesn't solve my original problem of creating a patch because I created single file setups without
the cache setup sources checked. What would be your recommendation to solve this problem?
Would the users MSI file need to be edited? I've tried the obvious, that is having files copied directly into the Program Files (X86) folder.
Somehow, the OS intercepted, and one of my older database files was used. This was carefully tracked with my own custom software, so I know
this happened, and can only imagine that the installer technology or the OS has a memory and a copy of the old file.
Thank you, K.
