Question About New Compression Heuristic

Hello,

I've updated to the new X8 and was looking at the new compression engine, hoping to reduce the size of my current installs.

I tried the following:
rebuild with X8, size of 42,971 was larger than previous build with X7 (42,956)
changed the compression slider to "Best", size was larger again at 43,685
changed the compression slider to "Best-1", size was 42,749

I am running X8 in a Virtual machine (Windows 10). I realized my memory for this VM was set to 4GB, and the notes on the new compression mentioned needing 16GB. I edited my VM to have 16 GB, restarted it and build my installer again to get a size of 42,791. I also watched the memory use while my command line install ran and it didn't go any higher than 4GB.

Will the new compression engine reduce the size of my installs? Does this work in a virtual machine?

Thanks,

Sheri

Dear Sheri,

this is entirely expected. The improved 1.5 GB compression dictionary would make a difference only with the largest of setup payloads.
For what I see, you have already experienced "nominal" benefit from your current payload.
This is the best of what is possible with the state-of-the-art compression, presently.

In regard of compressing in a Virtual Machine environment, this will work exactly as it was a physical machine. Supposing of course, that the VM has at least 16 GB of memory when running the highest compression rate. At any rate, please consider that a Virtual Machine is Always a software emulation of physical machine. Consequently, the VM's performances will be lower than a physical machine.

Hope this helps you.

Thanks for letting me know. Our installs aren't massive, but any bit of compression helps so I thought I would try it.
