Performance problem when installing to network path

Hi,
when installing files to a network path, the whole process is extremely slow.
We are installing 128 MB in 973 files.
Using a batch with xcopy this takes 3 minutes.
Using the installer this takes 76 minutes.
What options do we have to speed up the process?
