Old and New InstallAware Versions Questions.

Postby ReneXYZ » Thu Oct 22, 2020 5:06 pm

Hello,

We have a bunch of projects developed with Visual Studio 2015 were we use IntallAware X4 to create the installer files for those projects. We have been doing this for years and InstallAware X4 has been working perfectly.

We have now decided to move the projects to Visual Studio 2019 as well as update our version of IntallAware to the latest version. However, we want to do this in steps, so our plan is to first update the projects to Visual Studio 2019 while keep using our old version of InstallAware X4 and once the upgrade to Visual Studio 2019 is completed, proceed and upgrade our version of InstallAware. The reason for this is that we want to play it safe by minimizing the number of upgrades we do in one shot.

First question, can we move to Visual Studio 2019 and keep using InstallAware X4 for now? We did a test run and noticed that there is no longer an “InstallAware” menu item in the Visual Studio 2019 toolbar so clearly not everything is going to be the same. That has us a little concerned.

Second question, should we expect things to go smoothly when upgrading from InstallAware X4 to the latest version? Will the projects remain unchanged or will we have to make changes to exiting scripts?

Thank you.

Did you install IA X12 successively Visual studio 2019 installation?

You may eventually need to update the Application Runtimes included by your projects (if any). For the rest, there isn't any particular action to take when upgrading from InstallAware X4 to X12.

We have not yet upgraded to X12.

Basically, we installed Visual Studio 2019 and then after than, we installed IA X4. Things appear to be working fine, however we wanted to know if there are any know side effect from installing such an old version of IA on top of Visual Studio 2019. Can you confirm?

Thanks.

In all honesty, I don't even recall if IA X4 included then a VS 2019 Extension...I don't think so and this also explains why you don't see the “InstallAware” menu item in the Visual Studio 2019 toolbar.

Consequently, you installed exclusively IA X4 ...and this doesn't install any Extension on top of Visual Studio 2019.
