I'm trying to upgrade from 18 Studio Admin to X12 Studio. I uninstalled the old version from my VM, installed the new version, but when I tried to apply the license I got the "Studio Admin is installed but license is for Studio" error. At no point during the installation was I asked whether I was using Studio or Studio Admin.

What do I need to do to install X12 at Studio level so my license will apply?

You have to select the edition to install during the setup wizard. Otherwise, it's the Studio Admin edition the one installed by default.
