InstallAware

When I try to shutdown or restart win2000, it does not shutdown. The shutdown request seems to be eaten. I don't get a msg box saying some process is not responding, end it now. By trial and error I found that if I end process myahe.exe before shutting down, the shutdown proceeds as expected.

I'm running IA v6.0 sp1. I think this may have started happening when I switched the trial IA from studio admin to studio. Or, it may have started happening after I installed a trial version of another, competitor install builder that, I think, put a bunch of .net stuff on my win2000 PC.

Can you tell me how to fix this?

I have the same problem on XP Pro. Definitely started happening as soon as I installed IA 6.0 SP1.

I assume that you have not configured automatic updates for IA6?

Click on the update icon in the tray bar and configure automatic updates. Do not cancel this process - instead configure until finished.

Then Windows will shut down as always.

The above resolved this problem for me. Another work around is to bring up the update scheduling tool by selecting it in the windows system tray, then selecting cancel. You have to do this after each startup (or probably login) and before you attempt to shutdown windows.

You don't need to do that each time you log on to Windows! Once you've configured the update, its done.

I have downloaded the latest version of InstallAware today and this problem appears to still be here. Is this being looked at with the intension of fixing?

If you have a setup that is running, or minimized to the system tray, it will now maximize itself. This helps you remember that you need to complete the setup wizard (or whatever other task you have running based on the setup engine, like the update scheduler, an update, and so on).

The exact bug that I am finding is as follows:

I install my application - everything goes really well as with previous versions of InstallAware.
I log off - ok
I log back on - nice task bar message tells me to configure automatic updates.
I Ignore nice message - Now I cannot log off. At log off nothing prompts me as to why.

From my experience of having Windows Update on my desktop, I would expect a lot of my customers to ignore this message until they are not busy.

The above experience also occurs if I go in to the config wizard and then select cancel. I would expect an experience similar to the Windows Update where a cancel, or ignore just means "I'll do it later", perhaps after a log off.

I need to know that this will be fixed in the near future.

I regard to the rest of InstallAware, I think it is great. I have been using version 5 for installs around the world with great success.

So, I'm quite confused here...you say you have v5 installed, but the auto update functionality is available only with v6.

And speaking of v6, as I said before, in our latest builds, if there is a setup program minimized to the system tray, it will maximize itself and bring itself to the foreground, so the end-user can clearly see it requires attention before the system is allowed to shut down.

This behavior is by design - you cannot close a setup program unless you explicitly cancel it, even if during a system shutdown.

Sorry that I confused you. I added the bit about being a happy current customer of v5 as I did not want to put potential customers off with my post.

I am using the latest v6 (demo), downloaded yesterday. The build is:

Version 6.0 (Build gwinnett_sp3.111106)

There is no message when I go to log off or shut down. Also if I cancel the configuration the taskbar icon goes away. I still cannot then shutdown or log off.

You seem to be saying that if the user did either of these things they would be prompted at shutdown or log off that they had to configure the auto updates. If my understanding is correct, this is still not happening.

This might be happening because you previously had an older version of the v6 trial installed on your system. Just try it with your own setups built in v6 - you will see it does not happen (or let us know if it does, of course).

Success. Thank you for your help. I am still coming across the problem on the machine that I installed InstallAware 6 on to. However the problem is not apparent on any other machine I install a created setup.exe on to.

As this is want I want to do, I thank you for your help. I will play around with the settings on the InstallAware 6 machine to see if I can zero in on the issue.

Uninstall InstallAware 6 manually (do not use the auto upgrade feature), and then install the latest version from the public website (6.07).
