Problems patching computers which have already been patched

We are having problems patching an installation which has previously been patched. The original version 1 was previously patched to version 2. Now, I have not figured out a way to patch the machine to version 3. It keeps giving me error 2705.

I have tried including the full version of 1 and the full version of 2 in my patch references. I have also tried including the full version of 1 and the patch version of 2 in my patch references. Neither way works. The only way that I can get the install to go through is to completely uninstall the application, then re-install with the full version of either 1 or 2, and then do one patch to our new version. That works without getting the error.

This will not work for us as we have a ton of computers out there which were originally installed with 1 and then patched to 2. Un-installing and re-installing is just not an option. Is there no way to patch a previously patched computer without getting error code 2705?
