VS2010 Crashes - InstallAware X Evaluation

Postby redbyron » Sun Nov 14, 2010 1:01 am

Hello,

i have downloaded InstallAware X in order to evaluate and proceed with a buy.

The machine has Win7 Ultimate 64b + Win2008 64b + VS2010 Ultimate with Silverlight 4 tools.

After i installed Installaware 10 evaluation (Complete install), vs2010 was crashing when opening .xaml files , and occasionaly when opening .edmx files in xml editor or .config files...

That caused me one system format, and many hours of searching, without finding a solution to this...

At last, i managed to overcome this problem by reinstalling vs2010 and applying Silverlight 4 Client Tools again...

Any ideas why this is happening?
Regards,

Michael

I think you found the same problem I had at the first installation of IA.

If this is true, personally I think the problem it is caused by something that seems to be a bug of the "IA Add in" for visual Studio. In my experience, I have repeted the IA installation two times, on two different machines (both with Win 7 64 utimate and VS 2010). In both cases, if the installation of IA was executed including the VS Studio Add-in, this caused the crash of Visual studio 2010. In particular, the crash happened when I tried to edit any file of my c++ active vs project.

I suspect that this is caused for some interference, that seems to be generated by the Add in installation, with Visual Studio 2010 Intellisense feature.

I also found that just unistalling the IA Add in do not solved the problem for me. So to restore the previous system condition, I have first uninstalled IA completely then I have executed a system restore, in order to have the conditions of the Win OS as it was a few days before. Finally, I have once again installed IA without installing "Visual Studio Add in" and it worked perfectly and the problem with Visual Studio, has no longer happened.

This was occurred using IA 9 R2 sp3 .... and when I have Installed IA 10 I have deselected "Visual Studio Add in" (for safety...) ... so I do not know if this still occur with the last edition of IA.

I really hope this can help you.

Hello,

This is exactly what has happened. I also repeated the installation on two different machines, win7 64 ultimate with vs2010ultimate and vs2008 ide from sql2008 installation with the same results (ENVDTE interface crashing, probably due to intellisense)

Anyway, the vs2010 repair did the trick and the plugin also seems to work.

I propose to anyone interested not to install the plugin , it is time consuming repairing the studio :( and in my opinion the plugin is of almost no use...
Regards,

Michael

We have been unable to reproduce this based on your description. You may have other Add-Ins or applications which are causing conflicts. Could you please provide us with detailed, step-by-step, instructions to reproduce it?

Thank you.-

Could you provide a list of other plugins you use with VS?

HI Mills,

Personally I have not installed any other Visual studio 2010 plug-in, except that ones (if there are*** ) available in a complete standard Installation of Visual Studio 2010 professional setup.
In addition to Visual Studio installation, there is also Visual source safe 2005.

Anyway, for your convenience, follow you will find the copy of the info in VS 2010 about box (...as you can see ....there isn't no one plugin in the list):

Does anyone who has seen this have an environment like a VM where they can or have reproduced this?

It too broke my Visual Studio 2010. I can no longer change any C++ code. As soon as I type something, VS crashes. I literally installed InstallAware today. This bug was reported 5 months ago and this software is still out there in the wild breaking VS? Where can I send the bill for the time you'll make me waste trying to fix what you broke?

Dear adrianp,

I apologize, however we have not been able to reproduce this in-house, which makes the bug fixing process a lot harder.

Could you please try and give us some information on how to reproduce this problem?

I'm sorry, but I don't have time to help you fix your bugs. I've uninstalled the product and thankfully it seems to not be crashing any more.

Hi,

I keep having he same problem. I have Visual Studio 2010 and as soon as I installed Installaware 9 R2, Visual studio started to crash when I try to open XML or XAML file. So I uninstalled InstallAware, but it still keeps crashing, which is very annoying as I can no longer use my Visual Studio 2010.

Can you please provide a list of steps how to completely unregister InstallAware from my system so that I can use my development environment again?

Thank you
Lukas Neumann

Dear Lukas,

Your best bet would be to reinstall VS - is that not an option for you?

Hi,

I re-installed Visual Studio 2010 and it seem to be working now. However soon I will have to install InstallAware again because I will have to create an installer for my app - is there a way (possibly an installation option) to install InstallAware so that it won't break my Visual Studio again?

Thank you
Lukas
