I've constructed a sample background using Word. I then copied it into Paint.Net where I did some final cropping and resizing to 1024x768. When I tried to load the bitmap into a dialog using the image/picture control, IA punts the error saying it's an "Invalid bitmap". It's been a long time since I last had to think about the internals of bitmaps but is there anything about the dialog editor's use of bitmap files that can explain the error it gives me?
If I right-click the properties of the bitmap Windows display it's size is 1024x768 (as expected) and the bit depth is 32 (as expected).
Then again, is it possible that Paint.Net is causing the problem?
EDIT: Forget it! It was my bad. I inadvertently saved the bitmap with .bmp extension as a PNG format file. When I switched Paint.Net to BMP format, all was well. Sorry!
