Invalid drive F:\

Postby pokr2 » Wed Mar 23, 2011 1:47 pm

Hi,

One of my installers is a single-file compressed EXE. Source caching is explicitly disabled.
At some point, a user installed the application from a USB thumb drive containing the EXE.
Now we have an installer for a new version of the application, that upgrades the existing version.
When this user launched the new installer from a CD, with no thumb drive connected, got the error message "Invalid drive F:\" during the "Uninstalling previous version" step.
The curious thing is that seems like after plugging ANY (no matter what its contents) thumb drive to the USB port, everything will function correctly.
Can any body explain the rationale behind this behavior?

Thanks, regards,

Octavio

Dear Octavio,

To execute the upgrade, InstallAware refers to the original setup sources, and hence it is looking for it in F:\.
When you say any flash drive, do they all map to F:\?

Giaviv,

Thank you very much for your answer.
Yes, what I meant is that the installer seems to be good with the fact that there's an F: drive, regardless of what it contains.

Dear Octavio,

That makes sense - its probably because IA is accessing the drive and fails if it doesn't exist..

Dear Octavio,

I was informed that this bug has been fixed in IA 10. Which version of InstallAware are you using?

Unfortunately then you would have to upgrade to 10 to get rid of this bug.
Otherwise, I suggest you make sure that your users don't run their installers from thumb drives.
