Hello, I have a problem with IA 10.10. I've asked help in the past but got no satisfactory answer.
My setup programs are executed in several countries, and I only want to provide a few localized setups (Japanese, French, German, English) - because only for these languages I can grant a professional level translation.
Unfortunately, when I execute it in a language that I have not localized (e.g.: Spanish or Italian), some messages get translated anyway, and with a very very low quality. These messages are not coming from Windows, but from the "Shared" messages (installer messages). The quality is so poor that partners complain that the product itself is introduced in a bad manner.
I've tried to set English as default language, but it doesn't help. Installer messages are translated anyway, based on the current OS language (set in control panel). How can I prevent it? How can I say: use English if the language is not supported?
Some examples of wrong translation form the localization tool (in Italian):
1st phrase of Installation Messages:
string: Per favore installa l'aggiornmento dei controlli comuni da Microsoft prima di provare a installare questo prodotto. (wrong translation, contains misspelling)
8th phrase of Dialog Text:
string: Se scegli No, il setup terminerà. Ad qogni modo, sarai in grado di riprenderlo da dove lo hai lasciato quando riavvierai il setup. (contains misspelling, also syntax is wrong)
Thanks in advance.

Re: translation of installer messages
Hi,
You can actually manually edit these messages - would that solve your problem?

Re: translation of installer messages
Hi, thanks for your quick answer.
Editing messages doest solve the problem at all. I can’t translate messages for any language in which my setup can run. Even if I correct the translations you have made in Italian (because I’ve found out they are wrong), I’m not able to understand if installer messages are correctly translated in Chinese, Hebrew, Arabic, Danish, Portuguese, etc. Not before somebody reports that.
The problem is much deeper than it seems: a prospective customer approaching a product for the first time, runs a setup created with InstallAware and has a concrete possibility to see messages badly translated and with typos. What would be his/her impression? "they don’t know how to write in my language, yet they try - what a shame". If they report the error, I can correct a translation, so the next prospective customer will not have that bad impression...
Any possible solution to this embarrassing problem? It would be enough if I could tell setup "run only in this language". Or if I could copy in an efficient way the English translations over every language not supported by my installer.
Thanks.

Re: translation of installer messages
Not super pretty, but it looks like you can just overwrite all the language files with translations.English or what's in it, in the Trans folder. When I looked at the .map file it appears it is just a line by text file for translations. What's in the .map file splits the lines into the separate categories...i.e...Dialog Text, Installation Messages, etc..
Re: translation of installer messages
Installer Messages are stored as shared.Translations.Language (and shared.Translations.Original). It seems to me that they are generated only when you edit them, and in this case they are copied from the standard translations (probably stored somewhere in the IA resources). So if this is the way to solve the problem, one should:
- generate shared messages for all languages
- overwrite the shared.Translations.Language with shared.Translations.English
Is there any other way? In the past I didn’t have this problem - setups were running just in English (that was good enough, and surely not embarrassing!)
Thanks!

Re: translation of installer messages
Setups that are not localized should run in English regardless of the target machine's language. Could you please verify?

Re: translation of installer messages
My setup is unfortunately localised in a few languages. But shared messages are applied even for non-localized languages. Is there a way to turn localisation off and have back a non-localized setup? Thanks.
Re: translation of installer messages
You can delete the localization files (they are added to your project as support files).

Re: translation of installer messages
I’ve removed translations from my support files, and also deleted related files from the project folder. Installer messages are still translated. I’ve tried the setup in Italian, on a PC with English WXP, but with Italian in the regional options panel. The messages are translated in a really funny way!
I’ve created a new project from scratch to test this: shared messages (a.k.a. installer messages) are translated to the language set in the regional options - you can try it.
Thanks

Re: translation of installer messages
Hi,
This happens if the localization wizard has been run at least once. Shared messages will indeed appear in the system locale. You can replace the installaware\trans folder contents with the English files that I am attaching here to solve this.

Re: translation of installer messages
From a quick test it seems the problem disappeared! Thanks very much for your help, will now test it thoroughly.
