InstallAware 17 Compression Error

I upgraded to InstallAware 17 Studio from version 16. I now get an error when building a Standalone or Web installation.

This is on the Best Compression Setting:
...
Created Windows Installer database
Built installation executable
Injected setup languages
Injected runtime files
Error during build: Unable to build setup files: An error occured during (de)compression
Compressing install: bossdboptions.dfm (0%)

If I use the next lower setting I get an Out of memory error.

If I use the middle setting it complies without errors.

I am running on Windows 7 x64, 16GB of RAM.

Coder,

Do you have any problem if you create a new project? I created a basic template and I tried various build options such as no compression and maximum compression and it both builds successfully and it can run the setup without a problem. Does that work for you as well?

Does your problem occur only when building a pre-17 created project?

I created a new .net setup, i didn't touch anything, just clicked Compile Single file.

Building Project: InstallAware 17
Output Folder: D:\Development\Test\4.5\InstallAware 17\Release\SingleDeployment Type: Compressed Single Self Installing EXE
Code Signing: Disabled
Compression: Best
Compiler Variables: BUILDMODE=SFX,LANGUAGE=English,"TITLE=InstallAware 17",TARGETDIR=$TARGETDIR$,IADIR=C:\PROGRA~2\INSTAL~2\INSTAL~2,PROJDIR=D:\DEVELO~1\Test\4.5\INSTAL~1,IAVER=17.00
###
Cleared output folder D:\Development\Test\4.5\InstallAware 17\Release\SingleBuilt plug-in action Windows Installer
Built plug-in action (Un)Install MSI Setup
Built plug-in action Windows Installer
Built plug-in action File Bag
Built plug-in action (Un)Install MSI Setup
Built plug-in action File Bag

Injected setup languages
Storing support files: componentstree.dfm (0%)
Storing support files: licensecheck.dfm (2%)

Error during build: Unable to build setup files: Insufficient memory
Compressing install: welcome.dfm (9%)

That's exactly what I did and mine was fine. All compression slider settings were ok.

I've a suspicion that Francesco might like to know what happens if you uninstall 17 and then reinstall it without running the licence exe, that is, see what happens if you build a template in evaluation mode. Is that an option you could try?

OK, I unstalled and reinstalled InstallAware 17 Studio. I ran it as a Trial edition and created a new .net setup project. It complied fine. I then opened the one I created in the last message (registered version) and it still fails.

Dear Coder,

when did you regenerate your personal activation file?
are you using the correct one generated for IA 17?

Regards

I regenerated last Friday when I installed version 17. I can try regenerating a new one?

... yes please try.

By the way, if you used a wrong license file ... product re-installation is required as well.

I regenerated the Licence file and installed it. I am still getting an error.

Full Compression:

Created Windows Installer database
Built installation executable
Injected setup languages
Storing support files: bossdboptions.dfm (0%)
Storing support files: componentstree.dfm (1%)
Storing support files: licensecheck.dfm (5%)
Storing support files: progress.dfm (10%)
Storing support files: registrationwithserial.dfm (12%)
Injected runtime files
Compressing install: wizard.dfm (19%)
Error during build: Unable to build setup files: Insufficient memory

The next lower Compression setting now works.

Dear Wayne,

I just tried to replicate what you reported ... but here it works fine.

So if haven't missed your finding, it worked fine with leaving IA as trial but it fails once activated.
Did you used the same machine when you tested the package as trial?

Yes it is on the same machine. It did change because before it would fail on both the Highest level and the second highest level. Now it only fails on the highest level. Is there any logs I can send you that might help?

Dear Wayne,

unfortunately, the only log available is the one you see with the process build dialog.

I know that what I'm going to say requires sone additional work;
do you have any chance to verify the same with installing IA on a different machine?

I'm really not able to replicate your findings.

I don't really have time to do that. I will just run on the second highest compression setting for now. I'm sure someone else will report the problem too.

Hi there,

I can confirm the problem when building a new setup from template (e.g. .NET Setup):

Code: Select all

Building Project: New Project
Output Folder: C:\Users\Markus\Documents\New Project\Release\WebDeployment Type: Compressed Web-Based EXE
Code Signing: Disabled
Compression: Default
Compiler Variables: BUILDMODE=WEB,LANGUAGE=English,"TITLE=New Project",TARGETDIR=$TARGETDIR$,IADIR=C:\PROGRA~2\INSTAL~1\INSTAL~1,PROJDIR=C:\Users\Markus\DOCUME~1\NEWPRO~1,IAVER=17.00
###
Cleared output folder C:\Users\Markus\Documents\New Project\Release\WebBuilt plug-in action Windows Installer
Built plug-in action (Un)Install MSI Setup
Built plug-in action Windows Installer
Built plug-in action File Bag
Built plug-in action (Un)Install MSI Setup
Built plug-in action File Bag
Built plug-in action (Un)Install MSI Setup
Created Windows Installer database
Built installation executable
Injected setup languages
Storing support files: componentstree.dfm (0%)
Storing support files: destination.dfm (0%)
Storing support files: licensecheck.dfm (2%)
Storing support files: progressprereq.dfm (5%)
Storing support files: registrationwithserial.dfm (6%)
Storing support files: setuptype.dfm (6%)
Storing support files: startmenu.dfm (8%)
Storing support files: wizard.dfm (10%)
Injected runtime files
Error during build: Unable to build setup files: An error occured during (de)compression
Compressing install: mWinRunExec.dll (76%)

The cause of this problem seems to be the compression level "Default". After setting the compression level explicitly to "Best" (open "Project Settings", set compression to "None", close dialog with [OK], reopen "Project Settings", set compression to "Best", close dialog with [OK]) the build works without any problems:

Code: Select all

Building Project: My dotNET Setup
Output Folder: C:\Users\Markus\Documents\My dotNET Setup\Release\WebDeployment Type: Compressed Web-Based EXE
Code Signing: Disabled
Compression: Best
Compiler Variables: BUILDMODE=WEB,LANGUAGE=English,"TITLE=My dotNET Setup",TARGETDIR=$TARGETDIR$,IADIR=C:\PROGRA~2\INSTAL~1\INSTAL~1,PROJDIR=C:\Users\Markus\DOCUME~1\MYDOTN~1,IAVER=17.00

Compressing install: mMSI.dll\mMSIExec.dll (28%)
Compressing install: mWinRun.dll\mWinRunExec.dll (30%)

Hope this helps,

Cu
