Download of WMB fails when using a proxy requiring a pswd

I searched this forum a few weeks ago on the topic of when there is a proxy server between the desktop and installer's web site, especially when the proxy requires a userid and pswd.
From the replies, I concluded that IA detects the proxy settings from Windows (Ctrl Panel > Internet Properties), and uses the native Windows facilities. If a password is required, the standard msg box pops up for the user to enter their details. This is not happening for me. I get the usual 'Retry Download?' dialog that appears whenever there is a problem with WMBs.
We have a test proxy server, in which one port is 'open' and another that requires an id and pswd. The web site uses https. The installer works perfectly when the proxy doesn't require credentials. However, when I switch to the proxy server's port that requires the user's credentials, I get the error dialog, stated above, but no option to enter the id and pwd..
What should happen in these circumstances? Do I have to do something extra?
