Download of WMB fails when using a proxy requiring a pswd

I searched this forum a few weeks ago on the topic of when there is a proxy server between the desktop and installer's web site, especially when the proxy requires a userid and pswd.

From the replies, I concluded that IA detects the proxy settings from Windows (Ctrl Panel > Internet Properties), and uses the native Windows facilities. If a password is required, the standard msg box pops up for the user to enter their details. This is not happening for me. I get the usual 'Retry Download?' dialog that appears whenever there is a problem with WMBs.

We have a test proxy server, in which one port is 'open' and another that requires an id and pswd. The web site uses https. The installer works perfectly when the proxy doesn't require credentials. However, when I switch to the proxy server's port that requires the user's credentials, I get the error dialog, stated above, but no option to enter the id and pwd..

What should happen in these circumstances? Do I have to do something extra?

Regards, John

Dear John,

let me investigate a little more on this ... but I believe that you can't use a proxy that requires an ID and password.

Dear Francesco
I've researched and I fear you might be right. If so, it does sound like a definite requirement. I hope you are able to find something positive - even if it's 'in a near future release'.

Someone said they had found a workaround in:
http://www.installaware.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=9386

But their solution is outside of my experience:
ok but anyway....I use now the urlmon.dll and function URLDownloadToFileA and it works without problem at this customer.

Are you be able to explain how their solution might work?

I don't think that we have an immediate need for this right now, but it would be nice to know how we might handle it when suddenly becomes a problem.

Regards, John

Dear John,

I suppose that user developed a dll or an exe for this specific purpose, using the WIN API function "URLDownloadToFile".
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms775123(v=vs.85).aspx

If you search for this function over Internet I am sure you will find some samples on how to use it.
Alternatively, you could try to contact that user using the link to thread you posted... maybe he could help you.

Dear Francesco
I take it that IA does not support proxy servers that require authentication.
Do you have any way for customers to raise requests for new features?

I will follow up as you suggested.
