Get variable list?

How can you get the defined variable list? I want to improve my plugins by allowing a drop down list (as the 'integrated' plugins have

Unfortunately this is not possible at compile time. I believe none of the integrated plugins offer this functionality - unless they have some hard-coded lists, of course
