Installing and auto-updating N-tier applications ?

Postby davcha » Mon Oct 20, 2008 4:21 am

I'd like to know if the following is supported by InstallAware :

1 - Auto-updating a windows service on a scheduled basis (eg. every day 3:00 am)

2 - Auto-updating clients of the windows service to get the lastest compatible client
For example, a client/server application with major updates on the server : clients must wait for server update before updating.

3 - Extend 30 days trial installs X times, or define a longer trial period (eg. 60, 90 days)

For 1 and 2, i would like to see some kind of tutorial to try it with trial version of InstallAware.

Thanks

Yes of course, this is all possible with InstallAware. You should read the Web Updates whitepaper to get an idea of how updates are implemented in InstallAware. You will then be able to customize the built-in update scripts to your liking and achieve objectives 1&2. As for #3, how you implement that depends entirely on how you've implemented your trialware functionality.

Are 1 & 2 possible with express edition, or upgraded edition is required ?

You definitely will need to script those options in, so you need at least Developer and preferably Studio for debugging support and custom dialogs.
