Windows Installer 4.5 features

Postby dawidp » Thu Jan 15, 2009 1:18 am

I remember reading that InstallAware in order to maintain compatibility with Windows Installer 2.0 forgoes some exclusive / new features in Windows Installer 4.5 such as "UAC patching". Would you please elaborate?

Are there any other limitations in regards to 4.5 or deployment on Vista and Windows7?

Any plans to support full feature set of 4.5?

Regards,
Dawid

Actually that's not an MSI 4.5 feature but an MSI 3.0 feature - LUA patching/patch uninstallation. We've had a lot of requests for this and are trying to figure a way to add it without breaking compatibility.

As for MSI 4.5 - this is already and fully supported. In fact, some features were already supported BEFORE MSI 4.5 was itself released:

* MSI Chaining - already possible
* External UI Handler - already possible

These features were implemented with the release of MSI 4.5 beta in InstallAware's joint beta with Microsoft (press release here: http://www.installaware.com/news-msi-45rtm.htm):

* Transactions

So in your InstallAware copy today, you already get full transaction support and all other MSI 4.5 features built-in.

I see that InstallAware 9 is out now.

Has this feature (LUA) implemented yet? - It's a requirement for me to buy.

In another post by InstallAware I read that LUA cannot be implemented because of backward compatibility. Does this statement still stand?

Thanks,

Peter

For patching protected system areas, I'm afraid this still does stand.

What do you mean by "protected system areas"? - Everything that is not accessible by a non-admin-user? - Which would include "c:\\Programs\\" as well, doesn't it?

Does InstallAware 9 support any other way that a non-admin user can install a patch of a product that was installed with admin-rights?

Thanks for the ínfo!

Peter
