If you haven't put the dll into the gac, you need to register it with the /codebase flag. I don't know if you've installed the assembly in the gac or not.

Dear SteveRing,

It is indeed a weird problem. Have you had any luck installing other 4.0 assemblies?

No. I only have two assemblies that are also com accessible. Neither of them register. They are both managed c++ if that makes any difference.

SteveRing,

I would advise you in the mean while to use "regasm.exe" as a work around. Are you sure that your assembly is strong signed?

Thanks

I'm sure that it's has a strong sign. If it didn't I couldn't install it into the gac. I'm not exactly sure how I would use regasm, as I don't know where it would be installed. Is there some variable that tells me where the 4.0 gac is etc.?

Dear SteveRing,

I have been looking into this and I have been able to sign other strong names assemblies to the GAC with InstallAware. I will continue my research, but so far it looks like there is a problem with your specific DLL - please try and check it on your end and make sure that it is valid, has no dependencies etc.

Thanks

It installs to the gac ok. It wouldn't do this if it didn't have a strong name. And, while there it's usable as a .net assembly, so there are no missing dependencies. If there were it wouldn't load and wouldn't work as an assembly. And, I can open a dos window, as an admin, go to the gac and use regasm on the assembly - again indicating that it has no missing dependencies, and it will then work as an activex object as well. So, I'm not sure what else I can check.
What happens if you make a strong name assembly using c++?

I'm leaving for a week, and won't be back to check on this till the 24th. So, you'll have a while to figure this out (hopefully).

Were you able to find a solution to this?

Dear SteveRing,

Unfortunately - no. Again, I was able to sign my own 4.0 .NET assemblies that I compiled here. I know that it's weird that your assemblies register with regasm but not with IA, but I can't point to anything being wrong with IA since my assemblies register just fine..

Please let me know your thoughts

Were your assemblies in c# or C++. I'm wondering if the problem is that the c++ assemblies get installed into GAC_32 instead of GAC_MSIL. So, were you trying a c++ assembly?

Dear SteveRing,

They were C# assemblies...

Can you try a c++ one and see if that works for you?

Dear SteveRing,

Is there a C++ assembly that you can send me (preferably a 3rd party one)?
