Hi Mills,
Any chance you could get a XP machine to test this and try to reproduce the bug? If you can, just do the following:
1. create an hebrew/chinese account (even if the system is a English one)
2. Run michaelNeshbit's installer
3. Make sure you choose "install for one user only (current user) option in the last screen.
4. Then try to uninstall it from "Start" --> project name --> uninstall project name
As I said earlier, I really need your help here, I don't know what to do.
Thanks in advance!

benjo, Thanks for the detailed steps. I just need an XP CD/iso so I can install eastern language support. Hopefully my boss will provide one asap!

I'm downloading an ISO now and will have time to investigate this on Monday.

Thanks Mills, I appreciate. We still did not find any work around this so I look forward to Monday :-)!

Could not reproduce. I used the name that was previously given here (测试). I tried with the user as Administrator and Limited. I tried with the original Admin account and the test user. I tried installing for all users and only me.

Is there anything special being done for this user account? Any special settings?

This post (one of few that has a 'resolution') suggests that there could be a permission issue or something:
http://care.dimdim.com/entries/117118-u ... ersion-5-5

But, that link does correlate to some degree what has been mentioned (it only is affecting particular users, so if you could log on as a user who's unaffected, you shouldn't have a problem).

By the way, on the account that I created, the uninstall link links to:
"C:\DOCUME~1\5D6D~1\LOCALS~1\APPLIC~1\{5224EC1F-5458-4977-87DE-7DBA4C3F07D1}\New Project.exe"

Can you verify what the link directs to in the case of your failures?

Also, can you post a screenshot of the error?

Hi,
Sorry for the delay, I was travelling and couldn't get to this task!
One settings I have is in the Language settings, choose Hebrew for the non unicode.

To answer your questions:
1. See the attached screenshots
2. Target Link of the Uninstall:
"C:\Documents and Settings\לואר\Local Settings\Application Data\{5224EC1F-5458-4977-87DE-7DBA4C3F07D1}\New Project.exe"

If you look at the Updates errors, you can see that Michael and mine are almost identical. It is the same for the uninstall ones.

Thanks,
Benjamin

We still haven't been able to reproduce this in house. Has anyone been able to reproduce this using language packs, not just native Asian OS?

I'm going to work on getting another ISO and try installing it tonight. I'll give this another shot tomorrow.

Again, I'm unable to reproduce. This time on a native Taiwanese XP SP2.

I have asked our developers if they can shed any light on what conditions could throw that error, if it's an IA-generated error or if it's just throwing an msi error that's caught...

But, the bottom line is that there's still no clear cause for this error.

Here's what I'm seeing when I try to run a basic setup with only a line added to display $EXEDIR$ compared to the folder path displayed in explorer:
resourceDecompressAttempt.jpg
resourceDecompressAttempt.jpg (63.49 KiB) Viewed 48268 times
I've also tried playing around with language/locale settings also:
XPlanguageLocale.jpg
XPlanguageLocale.jpg (82.2 KiB) Viewed 48268 times
It could be helpful to know what your TMP/TEMP environment variables are set to.

Also, if you put a messagebox as the first line of code, will the messagebox appear before the error?

Also, for those of you who are experiencing this, are you running an AntiVirus? If so, can you reproduce this with the AV turned off (or exceptions on the EXEDIR)?

Hi,
My problem happens only for /update and for REMOVE=TRUE, not during basic set up...
Also, my system (as far as I know) is in English with Language for non-unicode set to Hebrew.

To answer your questions:
When I look for %appdata% I get: C:\Documents and Settings\לואר\Application Data
for %tmp% I get: C:\DOCUME~1\2D6C~1\LOCALS~1\Temp
I will try to put the line you said in the code and will report back.

In order for you to reproduce, did you try the exe posted by Michael on this forum, install it only for current user (an hebrew username) and then try to use update or uninstall from the start menu shortcuts?

If it helps, I could share with you or your dev team my desktop through teamViewer...

Thanks

Hi,
After some more investigation, I can say now almost for sure that the problem comes from Right-to-left languages (hebrew and arabic mainly)
Here is what I can say about my testing:

1st test:
1. I set the language for non-unicide to Hebrew (you need first to enable the "complexe script language" on the second tab of the languages and regional setting)
2. Install the exe for the current user only
3. try to click on the update or uninstall shotcut in start menu --> this should raise the errors

2nd test (reverse step 1 and 2):
1. Install the exe when the language for non-unicide is Hebrew
2. Change language for non unicode to English
3. try to click on the update or uninstall shotcut in start me: update does not work and uninstall raise an error (invalid command line)

I don't know the inside of MSI and windows enough to draw conclusions but it seems to me that this is related to the way $exedir$ is defined. It should be defines in a way that is "non-unicode language" agnostic so that changing this param will not affect the way the installer works

Please update me if you need more info or if you want access to my test machine
Thanks

Hi Mills, any news? I am really struggling and can't find a valid solution.
Running the compressed installaware package from anywhere on the machine works perfect. The problem is with the "uncompress" one, the one in exedir really.
Did you try to reproduce with Hebrew/arabic (any right to left, complex script language)?

Thanks

I'm going to set aside some time to test this again on Monday. I would like to confirm whether setting the display language or the locale seems to be the cause?
