Silent mode callback?

Calling setup.exe /s
allow running the setup package in silent mode.
Is there any method to obtain the progress?
If it is not possible, I am thinking to write a value in the windows registry during the installation.
Then my program read the registry value to obtain the progress....
any better idea?
