Round-trip Localization - how-to?

I've sent out the English text for translation and received back the localized strings (French). I then imported the strings into the project.
Now, one of the dialog boxes has changed slightly, so naively I ran the localization export utility again, expecting that I would see BOTH the English strings AND the previosuly IMPORTED French strings, so that we could make the small additions - what I see is that the FRENCH strings are NOT exported.
I only need to add a couple of new strings translations - how does one do this without having to redo all the previous work??
