How to do differential web updates

I have an application that I want to enable differential web updates for.
Example: We sent out a CD that installed version 8.0 of our software. We would like to upgrade to 8.1, so I can make a patch. Then we upgrade to version 8.2. Do I have to make separate patches, one from 8.0->8.2 and one from 8.1->8.2? If so, does InstallAware only download the patches that it needs? For example, if a user already had 8.1, then it wouldn't download the 8.0->8.2 patch, right?
Is this how InstallAware works?
