Oracle equivalent for MS SQL Instances?

Hi All,

Just purchased my licenses and have started to port over our setups to IA. We support both SQL and Oracle through ADO.Net connections and I have a screen that lets the user select SQL or Oracle. After that, for SQL I have used the MS SQL Instance to generate a list of SQL servers/instances and then let the user pick one and then test the connection (just like the example :D). Now, I wanted to do the same thing for Oracle...but haven't found a way to do it :( Is it possible? Has anybody done it?

If it does not exist, I was thinking of a plug-in...but the only way I can think to do it uses .NET...and plugins can't use .Net  - again, any suggestions?

Thanks,
Andy.

Crickey, thats a good question .... I'm afraid that none of us here know of any way to scan a network for Oracle instances like you can for MS SQL.

Sorry :(

Hi Tiago,

I don't really know much about Oracle myself, but if it runs as a service like MSSQL I would expect it can be done using the EnumServiceStatus API function. See MSDN http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library ... S.85).aspx
My installer had a requirement to list available MSSQL servers but when I tested the IA one, it listed all available SQL Servers. As you can imagine in an enterprise situation, we have hundreds of SQL Servers around the place.

I created my own plugin in Delphi that filters the Windows Service list on the current machine, and returns the names of the available SQL instances. I would expect it could be modified to return a list of Oracle instances.

In you want to PM me, I would be happy to provide you with the source code (As is without support) to assist you in solving your problem.

Cheers,

Drew.
