Patches are slow and use a lot of disk space

I've seen a lot of good questions about the performance of patches and the amount of disk space needed during the application of a patch, but no helpful responses or answers.
Our patch file is small (1/5 of the full install) but takes almost as long to install. While it's installing, it uses an incredible amount of hard drive space (3 times the size of our full install!).
I do not believe that all MSI-based installs experience these same performance characteristics. I suspect there are MSI parameters to modify this behavior, that either are not obvious or not supported in IA.
I'm embarrassed to discuss it with any of our customers, and I'm afraid that may be the reason that other posters have not gotten direct explanations from IA as well. Can someone from IA please address these issues? Thanks.
