Cannot get setup path from install exe

Hi,
Apologies in advance if this one has been answered already, for some reason the search on this forum doesn't seem to let me go past page 1.
I am currently in the process of migrating the setup of a client/server application from Wise to InstallAware 8.0.
We require the client install to be a single file that is setup when needed and run from a server share. It is located in the server program folder.
The Wise script contains a built in variable called INST which is the pathname containing the installation exe. This path is used to prepopulate the path to the server and read from an ini file in that location.
I am trying to replicate this behaviour in IA, but not having much success. The help file, under Pre-Defined Variables, has a couple of candidates - EXEDIR & ROOTDIR. Both of these variables seem to point to the temp location that the single-file exe extracts to.
Can anyone suggest a way to make a single file exe return this information, or maybe an acceptable workaround?
Thanks
