Attempting to get value of undefined variable

All,

I'm having a problem when running our installaware implementation on virtual machines.

If the VM has a machine name greater than 8 characters in length the following error message is thrown during file install process of the installer:

Runtime error in setup script:

Line 267: Attempting to get value of undefined variable INSTALL_SERVER

INSTALL_SERVER is a boolean variable that is given that value of whether a component of the installer is selected for install or not. If the user has selected to install this component INSTALL_SERVER should be set to true. I've traced through the setup and it is correctly given the value if the component is selected and this can be seen on the VM because the variable is used in some decision making as to whether or not some UI should be shown.

When the variable is created it is not assigned a value. This could potentially be the problem however as this issue only ever happens on VMs with machine names longer than 8 characters (we have physical hardware with machine names longer than 8 characters on which this behaviour isn't found) I don't think it is the root cause of the problem.

I'd appreciate any help or pointed to a statement somewhere that this is a known limitation of InstallAware 7.

Thanks
Stu

You should use the persistent flag in Set Variable.

Thanks for the quick response Michael.

Through what scope is the variable persisted? Is it for the life of the installation or is it persisted outside of the current session for use at some other time?

Have you any idea why this is linked to the 8 character VM name?

Thanks,
Stu

This ought to have nothing to do with the VM name. Please read the help file for further details on persistent variables.
