Upgrade an existing Visual Studio deployment installed app?

I'm evaluating the Developer edition of InstallAware. The desire is to use an InstallAware installer to upgrade an app that was installed with a Visual Studio deployment project msi. The documentation seemed to say this was possible, however my first try at this failed - the uninstall phase failed. Is this supported? If so, I will try again and post details.
