Retry Extraction

Hello, I am evaluating IA and wanted to test the partial web deploy process. I wrote a very simple installer that has two features, one feature will install a simple .NET application that I wrote to display the Operating System of the computer it is run on. The other feature downloads a file of around 34 megabytes - it is an setup.exe.

Anyway, things went well until I tried running the IA setup.exe file from my webserver. It does do the checks for the prerequisites correctly but when I select a single feature for install, it does not matter which feature I choose, I get an error message after the .7zip file is downloaded to my temp directory. The error message is "Retry Extraction? Extraction of installation data downloaded from the web has failed. What would you like to do?

I have researched this forum quite a bit for this error and found many good posts. Yes, I have .7zip as a mime type in IIS, yes the URL to the file on my webserver is correct, etc. Nothing seems to resolve this problem. I have tried running the IA setup.exe on Windows XP with SP3 as well as Windows 7 Ultimate. It has thrown the same errors on each computer. The Windows XP with SP2 is a Virtual PC VM if that should make any difference.

I would appreciate any and all help/advice anyone could provide as I would really like to get this feature working. Also, I was wondering if it makes any difference that I want to use this feature for initial deployment of an application, so that is the scenario I am testing here - the application I am wrapping inside the IA installer does not already exist on either computer.

Thanks in advance!

Tim

Hi Tim,

This will need some investigation of your script, server configuration and the generated files; please submit a support ticket.

Thanks for the reply Andy. I have not purchased IA yet and am using the 30 day free trial. Does this give me the privilege of creating a support ticket?

Thanks

Yes - we provide support through our normal channels for all trial users too.

Goto http://support.installaware.com and log a ticket :) Please submit your script (as cut down as possible), with no dll's, exes etc.

Thanks again Andy, before I bother you any further are there any restrictions on the type of webserver I can use? I am running IIS7 on a 64-bit version of Windows Server 2008 Enterprise.

Thanks in advance!

Hi Tim,

There are no restrictions - but you will need to check your MIME configuration is correct on the server.

...might need to just add .7zip as a mime type...had a similar problem until I added the format.

As a work-around, if for some reason your company policy prohibits the distribution of ini or 7zip files, you should be able to rename them for distribution according to your server's configuration and use the copy/move command to rename the files as expected.
