Slightly OT: The meaning of R2.

Guys,

I noticed that the new version of IA 9 also has R2 in its name. I've been downloading some SQL Server 2008 versions from my MSDN subscription and I notice that Microsoft also use that as in SQL Server 2008 R2. Initially I thought that IA's usage suggested it was IA 9 release 2 but maybe that's the wrong way of looking at it?

As both IA and MS use R2 does it mean something different to what I thought was release 2? Just curious.

We at least use it to mean release 2, second edition, etc. :)

Like a .5 version upgrade.

Thanks Michael. I was half-expecting MS to release SQL Server 2010 as they've realigned most of their other products the same way. Then again, I don't suppose IA could call R2, IA 2010 or IA X as that's rumoured to be on its way sometime? Just probing-cum-fishing... :D

With the exception of v9 (5.4.9) and v9 R2 (5.7.9), where all dates are in US formatting (month.day.year), I'd like to share the information that all versions 6 onwards launched on x.x.x, where x is the major version number (ex: v7 was on 7.7.7). Due to some special circumstances this trend was broken with v9, but I think the tradition will make a return ;) Hint-hint!

If I read between the lines correctly then I need to keep the 10th October clear of distractions.
