Install files vs install assembly

I'm in the evaluation phase of IA. I've done plenty of reading of the forum and help. I'm having trouble building, getting the error "Error during build: Unable to get assembly information for ..." which has cropped up on the forum several times before, but I can't seem to find the same scenario.
I'm building a very simple WPF app with a single class library. They are both 32 bit targetting .NET4 client framework using IA9 R2 (Build Moya.sp2.050510) running on Vista 64-bit. I thought I had it narrowed down to the full .NET4 vs the client profile, because it worked under the full .net 4 and stopped when I changed to target .net 4 client profile. But then changing it back didn't fix it. Any thoughts on that would be welcome.
As a workaround, I was wondering if I can install the DLL using the Install Files rather than Install Assembly. The DLL is not COM visible and is not going into the GAC, so is there any need to install it as an assembly? My rationale is based on the concept of xcopy deployment...
