We've added SQL Express 2005 SP3 (32-bit) to our install (IA9). During install on a 32-bit Win7 machine (fresh), we get an error message:

"Microsoft SQL Server Express 2005 could not be installed. Please use Windows Update to manually install this update on your system."

Did you remove any prereqs required by SQL 2005 itself?

Also, ensure the command line parameters being passed to the SQL 2005 installer are valid. You can try running SQL 2005 setup non-silently with the same command line parameters to get visual feedback on the error.

I have an installation package that has been working for several months until recently. It installs 2005 SP3 and its prereqs in silent mode which is what I prefer. I've had 2 customers in the last week with this issue...

"Microsoft SQL Server Express 2005 could not be installed. Please use Windows Update to manually install this update on your system."

marcsuther, is that the 64-bit version of SQL Express 2005? Do you know what OS(es) this is happening on?
