MYAH_DISABLE_VISTA_RESTART_MANAGER on Windows 7

I want to try out the MYAH_DISABLE_VISTA_RESTART_MANAGER pre-defined variable to see if it will speed up my upgrades on Windows 7. I notice that the upgrades are taking a very long time and there are a lot of warnings from the Restart Manager about applications that can't be restarted. I put this as the first line of my MSICode for my projects main script:

Code: Select all

Set Variable MYAH_DISABLE_VISTA_RESTART_MANAGER to TRUE
Unfortunately, when I upgrade to the installer I built that includes this line, I still see a Restart Manager session starting and lots of warnings about applications that could not be restarted.

Am I using this variable wrong? Does it not work on Windows 7?

In case it matters, I'm using MSI 4.5 transactions during my upgrade. If I comment out the use begin/end transaction calls, I don't see the slowness and I don't see the warnings from the restart manager. Is MYAH_DISABLE_VISTA_RESTART_MANAGER incompatible with the use of transactions?

Thanks!

That should be enough to make it work. Are you including runtime pre-reqs that are calling for reboots or are you using Reboot and Resume commands?

I am using Reboot and Resume when prerequisites require a reboot. However, at the time I am seeing this problem, no prerequisites are being installed and no reboots are taking place.

Note that this problem does not happen if I do not use MSI transactions.

I was upgrading to an installer that had MYAH_DISABLE_VISTA_RESTART_MANAGER set to TRUE in it, but to remove the previous version it was running the old installer that did not have MYAH_DISABLE_VISTA_RESTART_MANAGER set to TRUE in it. I thought maybe this might be what's causing it to not work - that the old version was re-enabling the restart manager. Unfortunately, though, the restart manager still kicks in even when I upgrade from a version that has MYAH_DISABLE_VISTA_RESTART_MANAGER set to TRUE to a version that also has it set to TRUE.

I'm running on Win7/32 Enterprise.

Sorry, MYAH_DISABLE_VISTA_RESTART_MANAGER only applies to Vista at the time.
