Question about in use files

Hello,

I have a question about a behavior that I consider odd. I have a .exe which runs in the system tray as part of one of our applications. If I open up Windows Explorer and try to delete it, I get a message that the file is in use. This is exactly what I would expect. When I was using InstallShield, the installer would detect running components and ask the user to either shut them down or a reboot would be needed at the end.

This doesn't happen with InstallAware. I can install the program with InstallAware, launch the tray app, leave it running, uninstall, look in Windows Explorer and the exe is gone. However, even though the exe is gone, I can still use the application in the system tray. How is this even possible? How is InstallAware deleting something which is in use and actively launched on the system? Why doesn't the installer prompt about in use files? Is this behavior controllable?

Thanks!

-Jeff

You can use the Check Process command.

Hi

I tested this situation and found out that InstallAware renamed the original file (there was ".0" added to the file name) and placed a new one in its place.
It seems as long the original file is in use it runs as original file and with restarting the program runs as new one.
