Duplicate Items Pinned to the Task Bar

I was wondering if there was a way to detect if an application has already been pinned to the task bar or not? What I am noticing is that one version of our application will pin the short cut to the task bar. When we install the next version it will "uninstall" the previsous version but leave the shortcut pinned to the task bar. This means that the new version will add another pinned shortcut to the task bar.

It's seeming like an uninstall removes the pin, but not a previous version uninstall... Do you notice this as well?

Is the name of your setup changing with each new build? Normally, it's OK if the pin isn't removed, since it would be duplicated.

It looks like the pin is being recorded at:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\StartPage\NewShortcuts

However, it looks like that might only control the appearance of the pin.
