InstallAware

Hi,

This is the first time I am setting up Web Updates and being running over some issues when try to look for updates manually. I have read the white paper and search on the forum without any luck in to what could cause my problem. I will try to describe as much as I can all the details.

1) I have setup an Apache HTTP server and made the generated updates.ini file available for download (ie: http://192.168.1.203/updates.ini) the output result is : 2) The .EXE download fine if I copy the URL http://192.168.1.203/updates/3.6.204.96 ... Server.exe in my browser
3) When looking at the Uninstall program from Windows 7 "Programs and Features", my current install version is 3.6.203.95

So far, everything looks fine to me. The updates.ini with the definitions of available update is accessible, the install package is available and the version are written exactly the same way.

Now, if I click on the shortcut "product Update" that was created during the installation of 3.6.203.95, I can an error message telling me : "Unable to contact update server for product. Please check your Internet connection and try again"

Any idea what I am missing?

Dear Antoine,

Could you describe the network environment in which you are running your application? 192.168.*.* is usually an internal network that is not accessible to the outside world.

The 192.168.1.x network is our internal LAN. 192.168.1.203 is my PC IP where I have currently installed Apache HTTP to serve the file and also installed the product I try to upgrade.

Forgot to mention, I am using InstallAware 10 (Build Mooya.rtm.51110)

When I run Wireshark to see if any traffic is going out when I click the product update link, there isn't any http request going out either. Is there a way to query the installed product to see what is the URL it is trying to access?

The help information when I click on the installed product inside the add/remove programs is showing the good "update information".

There is 2 places I have setup the Monitor URL value :

1) Project -> Application Information -> Project Properties -> Monitor URL
2) MSIcode -> Project Settings -> Project -> Add-Remove -> Product Updates Link

I also tried setting up the link by setting the compiler variable UPDATE_SERVER=http://192.168.1.203/updates.ini by using the miabuild.exe command line and ... still can't connect

Please try going to http://192.168.1.203/updates.ini in your browser on the machine you are trying to run the update from. Are you able to view / download your INI file? It sounds like there a problem with your Apache (it could be that it doesn't know how to handle requests for INI files or other non html/ web files)

On google chrome it shows the INI file directly in the browser, on IE8 it pop-up the download file dialog window with "Type : Configuration settings"..

Thanks for your support... I am not sure what went wrong but when I tried this morning without changing anything from last night It listed the available updates!! I think it was due to an active VPN connection causing routing issues... yet to be confirm but it probably was a networking issue!!
