Patch specific instance of Product

I've got an installer that allows the user to install multiple instances of the same Product, those multiple instance can be the same version of the Product or another version of the Product.
During the install the user is prompted to give the instance a name which I append to the $TITLE$ variable and then call Transform Instance.
Now I want to build in "offline" (can't do online updates as servers we've got our product installed on frequently doesn't have access to internet) patching, but I need to be able to detect which instances and versions are installed and then allow the user to pick which instance should be patched.
Is this something that is supported natively in InstallAware or is this something I will have to handle myself by writing to the registry which instances and versions are installed and then read those registry values back out during the patch installer and let the user select the instance to patch?
Is there any pitfalls I should be looking to avoid when it comes to multiple instances and patching ?
