Long delay after language selection dialog

Some users lately complained about the long delay between the language selection and the welcome dialog. Nothing is shown during that time. The setup.bmp background is only displayed for a brief period right before the language selection dialog. They asked if we could at least display this background, so that they know, it's still working.
I recorded what's going on with Sysinternals Process Monitor. Between the two dialogs about 30 seconds of the 55 seconds are spent reading from the Windows\sxs directory with all sorts of files such as mfc, dotnet ...
The measurements are about the same on Win7pro32 and Win7pro64.

Is there anything we can do about this ourselves?

What kind of deployment are you using?

That's a single executable. But as the de-compression happens before, that shouldn't really make a difference. Right?

After closer examination, I suspect that the following line in "checkvc8sp1secure_x86" is taking so long.

Code: Select all

Find All Files in path $WINDIR$\WinSxS\mfc80.dll (include subfolders), write result into variable VC81SECURE
Is there another way to check for existing MFC Runtimes that might be faster on bloated Win7?

Hi,

I am not aware of such a way. That being said, there might be one - you might want to check with the vendors of this package to see if there is another way to detect it.
