Patching a Patched Installation

I'm currently testing out patches to see how they're going to work. I've encountered some difficulties, and a small comment in an old thread seems to shed some light
In:

Andy Mills says "You can't apply a patch to an already patched product."
So if I have version 1.0, and I patch it to 1.1, there is no way to patch that installation to 1.2?
What is the recommended strategy for applying multiple patches to a single installation? It seems rather strange to me that you're limiting your patching ability to only one patch.
Any help would be appreciate.
Thanks,
Andy

Andy,
There will be no problem at all patching 1.1 to 1.2. Please see this tutorial:

I have read that, and I'm able to create a patch for 1.1 to 1.2. I actually created the 1.2 patch to be able to patch from both 1.0 and 1.1 to 1.2.
What I tried was to use the auto-update feature. My installation of 1.0 was able to detect a patch was available to 1.1, download it and install it.
However the auto update doesn't detect the 2nd patch and take my installation from 1.1 (which is a patched 1.0 -> 1.1) to 1.2.
I suspect if I tried a complete 1.1 install, and applied the patch it would work fine. However I'm trying to take my patched 1.0 (patched to 1.1) to 1.2.
That's when i found the quote from Andy Mills saying "you can't apply a patch to an already patched product".
Does that make for a better explanation?

Hi,
I think that there is a little confusion with the way you perceive patches vs updates.
Patches are separate from version - they are intended to PATCH an existing version.
For example, if I create an application (say V1.0), and later discover that there is a crucial bug with it, I will issue a patch that will still leave it at 1.0, but will fix the issue.
When I will create another release of the application, perhaps introducing new features in addition to fixing issues, it will be V1.1, and will necessitate an update, not a patch.
