What exactly by using this program allows a clients computer that has installed a program made by InstallAware go and search for an update pack on an FTP server? Is there a task program, RunTime, or something running in the background?

Dear User,

Actually InstallAware uses a command line switch to execute the installed cached setup in upgrade mode and / or a Task that executes the command switch periodically.

I suggest to you to search in InstallAware documentation (press F1 from IA Ide) for "Web update".
All the process it is well explained and also it is described how it can be customized.
