Installaware project file path issue

Hi
I am having issues building an installaware project on installaware 12 (originally created in installaware 9), which I found out is happening because the path to the IA9 folder is stored in the project file. When I try to build with some runtimes added in, because I have since uninstalled IA9, the runtime files cannot be found, so it fails. I don't know if that was an upgrade issue or not, as before I added in the runtimes to the project, it was building fine in IA12, however it doesn't seem like such a brilliant idea to have the IADIR specified inside a project file, especially since we often create the project on a developer PC, then run the build on a separate build PC, where the directory structure may be different depending on the number of installaware versions previously installed, since ancient 8 character names are being used. I have manually fixed this in the project file this time, but what is the correct way to do this? or is this a bug?
Another question, is it really necessary to ever use 8 character names in project files and applications built for XP and onwards? Figuring out which installaware directory "C:\PROGRA~1\INSTAL~3\INSTAL~2" is can be done, but "C:\Program Files\InstallAware\InstallAware 12" is MUCH easier.
If IA could be updated to use proper filenames instead of legacy ones, reading the error messages IA generates for these instances would also be much easier, and make a whole lot more sense, as well as not force me to waste my time tracking down a project bug.
Thanks
Wes
