SQL Native Client 10 Install

Hello,
I wonder howto install the SQL Native Client 10 on a client PC?
I have found these sample script;
http://www.installaware.com/forum/viewt ... f=4&t=4498

But I have seen that in the Installaware11 ODBC page there is also a possibility to install the native client.
Which is the better way?

1. Using the original Microsoft MSI file (sqlncli.msi) for x64 and x86 ?
2. Using the ODBC page and the command Install ODBC Driver ?
3. Copying the dll and make a registry entry?

by the way. Which native client version is used when installing the native client from ODBC page? Is it version 10?

kind regards
Hans

Dear Hans,

Probably I missed your exact question, but with the ODBC view in InstallAware you can configure the ODBC DNS only.
This will not install the MS SQL runtimes.

If with your Installaware11 is not available the SQL Native Client 10 runtime (available with IA 2012), you can use the original Microsoft MSI package.

Let me know.

Dear Francesco,
thanks for help.

First I tried to install the native client with "Install ODBC Driver"

Code: Select all

~InstallAware Clipboard Data~
~Install ODBC Driver~
~{DD4FD6CE-A9FB-4F49-A60A-127952BA01A6}~
~SQL Server Native Client 10.0~
~D:\Q8Install.Aware\Sources\MSSQL\NativeClient-10\x86\sqlncli10.dll~
~~
~$WINSYSDIR$~
~~
~~
But this does not work for me: There where errors like "no not have permission to write to C:\windows\system32\sqlncli10.dll"
How can you do this with "Install ODBC Driver" ? Example ? How are the Attributes?

Then I tried it with the original MSI file

Code: Select all

~InstallAware Clipboard Data~
~(Un)Install MSI Setup~
~{20A11E2D-4B39-4E69-ACAE-60FF97C3502E}~
~"ADDLOCAL=ALL IACCEPTSQLNCLILICENSETERMS=YES",FALSE,,TRUE,D:\Q8Install.Aware\Sources\MSSQL\NativeClient-10\x86\sqlncli_x86.msi,,ODBCNATIVERESULT,ODBCNATIVERESULTLASTERROR,FALSE~
~mMSI.dll\mMSIExec.dll~
WHat I do not understand:
The program will be installed and the native client is installed too.
If I unistall the complete program, the programm is uninstalled but the Native Client and the "sqlncli10.dll" is still in WIndows\system32

Is this not automatically done by uninstalling? Do I have to add an separate uninstall for the MSI package if "REMOVE = TRUE" ?

regards
Hans

Dear Hans,

first install all the required runtimes using "Install MSI Setup" then configure an ODBC DNS if you need (... using DNS data source).

>> Is this not automatically done by uninstalling? Do I have to add an separate uninstall for the MSI package if "REMOVE = TRUE" ?
The runtime package is not removed during the unistall of your package. This because the MSI installation is not part of your database installation.

Anyway, I suggest you to leave it in this way, otherwise if the runtime is used by other installed applications, the removal could cause OS failure.
This is the suggested way ... if you check many other installation packages do the same.

Dear Francesco

<<Anyway, I suggest you to leave it in this way, otherwise if the runtime is used..>
ok, but what happens if I install my program again? Then the MSI package for the Native Client wikk be installed second time
How can you check if Native Client or the MSI package is already installed?

2. If I want to uninstall the MSI package with the Uninstall of my program, what have I to do?

3. Why is it not possible to install the Native Client with the "Install ODBC Driver"" command? It is just the "sqlncli10.dll" for driver

Dear Hans,
ok, but what happens if I install my program again? Then the MSI package for the Native Client wikk be installed second time
How can you check if Native Client or the MSI package is already installed?
The package will be executed again and installer should stop the installation because already installed.
To determine if native client is already installed, please refer to:
http://www.sqlservercentral.com/Forums/ ... x#bm466259
2. If I want to uninstall the MSI package with the Uninstall of my program, what have I to do?
With "(Un)Install MSI Setup" enter any legal Windows Installer command line parameter as "Action String" (please refer to MSDN documentations).
Alternatively click the Uninstall button to automatically generate a standard command line parameter.

Please refer to this link for more info: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms131321.aspx
Why is it not possible to install the Native Client with the "Install ODBC Driver"" command? It is just the "sqlncli10.dll" for driver
I do not mean that (I've probably been misinterpreted) ... of course you can do it.
The command will copy the required files and settings, from the machine you are using to build the setup to the target OS (when installed).
In this case when you unistall your app, the driver will be removed as well (... if another app is using it ... the app will not work anymore).

Hope this helps you.

Dear Francesco,

1 <<The package will be executed again and installer should stop the installation because already installed.

no, I have tried to install my program again when NAtive Client is already installed from former setup. There is no crash and no stop of the setup

2. <<Alternatively click the Uninstall button to automatically generate a standard command line paramete

Which Uninstall button do you mean? Can I call the (Un)Install MSI Setup in my MSI code again but with the Uninstall option?

3.<<The command will copy the required files and settings, from the machine you are using to build the setup
Have you ever tried this with the Native Client and with the "sqlncli10.dll"?
It does not work for me. Do you have an example?

best regards
Hans

Dear Hans,
1 <<The package will be executed again and installer should stop the installation because already installed.
no, I have tried to install my program again when NAtive Client is already installed from former setup. There is no crash and no stop of the setup
I mean the MSI package for the native client ... not your setup. The MSI installation should not report any error and your installation should continue.
2. <<Alternatively click the Uninstall button to automatically generate a standard command line paramete
Which Uninstall button do you mean? Can I call the (Un)Install MSI Setup in my MSI code again but with the Uninstall option?
If you double click the command in MSI code view, you shoul be able to see the "(Un)Install MSI" dialog with options.
Then in the Action Tab, there is the Unistall button.
3.<<The command will copy the required files and settings, from the machine you are using to build the setup
Have you ever tried this with the Native Client and with the "sqlncli10.dll"?
It does not work for me. Do you have an example?
Which OS are you using to try it? Which "Request Elevetion Level" Are you using with your IA project settings?

I used the following ( ... update the client files if the case ... I used a x64 OS) :

Code: Select all

~InstallAware Clipboard Data~
~Install ODBC Driver~
~{083ABEFF-786D-42D5-9877-00F501354F61}~
~SQL Server Native Client 10.0~
~C:\Windows\SysWOW64\sqlncli10.dll~
~C:\Windows\SysWOW64\sqlncli10.dll~
~$WINSYSDIR$~
~~
~APILevel=2$NEWLINE$ConnectFunctions=YYY$NEWLINE$CPTimeout=60$NEWLINE$DriverODBCVer=10.00$NEWLINE$FileUsage=0$NEWLINE$SQLLevel=1$NEWLINE$~

Dear Francesco,
thanks a lot for help.

I have tried to install as follows. (I think same as you code)

Code: Select all

~InstallAware Clipboard Data~
~Install ODBC Driver~
~{537C807C-9629-4CB3-B410-72C5E714C937}~
~SQL Server Native Client 10.0~
~D:\Q8Install.Aware\Sources\MSSQL\NativeClient-10\x86\sqlncli10.dll~
~D:\Q8Install.Aware\Sources\MSSQL\NativeClient-10\x86\sqlncli10.dll~
~$WINSYSDIR$~
~~
~APILevel=2$NEWLINE$ConnectFunctions=YYY$NEWLINE$CPTimeout=60$NEWLINE$DriverODBCVer=10.00$NEWLINE$FileUsage=0$NEWLINE$SQLLevel=1$NEWLINE$~
But I receive an error while installing. I habe only a german message which means "error while installing .. Please check if file Microsoft SQL Native Client 10 is available ... "

My Op is Windows 7 32bit

kind regards
Hans

Dear Hans,

I used a Win 7 32 bit OS to test it and works fine.

When do you call "Install ODBC Driver" in your script?

Dear Francesco,

I am confused. You write here;
<<I used the following ( ... update the client files if the case ... I used a x64 OS) :

but later you write you have tested it on Win 7 32bit?

<<When do you call "Install ODBC Driver" in your script?

I do this before Apply Install. I do the same a little step section before in the script for MySQL 5 ODBC and it works fine, but not for the Native Client 10.
What I can see: The file sqlncli10.dll will be copied to C:\Windows\System32 but then I receive this error message:

Error while installing the ODBC - driver: SQL Server Native Client 10.0. ODBC Error 11: Driver's Config DSN, ConfigDriver, or ConfigTranslator failed. Be sure that the file SQL Server Native Client 10.0 is available and you can access to.

I see in you ODBC install example that you copy the source file sqlncli10.dll from WIndows/SysWOW64 ?? Why this?
I have the sqlncli10.dll in my Source directory. (I had installed the original MSI file on an other win7 32but pc, put the sqlncli10.dll from there to my source direcotry)
Is there anything else we need or is the sqlncli10.dll the only file we need?

kind regards
Hans

Dear Hans,

I have done some research about and as I told you with my first reply, SQL NATIVE CLIENT can't be installed in that way.

The Install ODBC driver can be used to install more simple drivers as for "excel", "comma delimited" and so on.
With SQL NATIVE CLIENT more components and configurations are required and this will be not available just copying the DLL file.

Please have a look at the following documentation:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library ... .105).aspx
The SQL NATIVE CLIENT 10.0 installer package can be found here:
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download ... x?id=16978

Hope this helps you.

Dear Francesco,
thank you for your help.
Ok, then I will do this with the original MSI file.

But, it would be helpful for other people if you give a hint or advice somewhere in the documentation or help file that there is a problem with the Native Client

Thanks for your suggestion ... anyway it could happen with any other driver that requires an installation package.
So it could be not the only one.
