Installing a native x86 executable on an x64 machine

I have a program, built in MSFT Visual Studio for the x86 target platform.
If I install this program on my Windows 7 computer using the Visual Studio Setup installer the program gets put into the c:\program files (x86) folder and it runs fine.
If I use my InstallAware project to install this same executable on the same Win7 computer it gets put into the c:\program files folder and crashes in a way that makes me think the system thinks it is a native x64 program.
Is there a setting I need to set to make this probram get installed as a native x86 program?
Additional Information:
If I Install using the Windows installer, in the registry a node is created under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Sofware\Wow6432Node that points to my executable.
If I install using the InstallAware installer this node is created under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software.
