miabuild.exe hangs when called from a service

I am using FinalBuilder to call miabuild.exe. Finalbuilder is again called from a Team Foundation Server 2010 build agent service.

When I run the build miabuild.exe hangs. I have used sysinternals process explorer and looking at the call stack miabuild.exe seems to be waiting for some mouse input. Obviously it won't get any as it is a service that is calling it :-)

When I run miabuild.exe from a command line with the same parameters used by FinalBuilder everything runs fine and there are no prompts for any input.

What could be causing miabuild.exe to hang? Assuming it is actually waiting for mouse input, why would that be?

Another related question. I have turned of Authenticode as it seems like this causes some dialogs to appear. If this is correct will it be possible to turn it back on successfully when running as a service?

Using IA 9 (build Moya sp1.070409)

Cheers, Lars

It's difficult to tell what's going on here.

Have you tried calling another command line tool to see how it behaves in the same condition?

I'm doubtful anything has changed that would address this, but it would probably beneficial for you to test if this happens with the latest version of InstallAware (R2 SP3).

It really sounds like you're treading uncharted waters, so it's not clear the effect Authenticode has or what its effect might be once you have the service running like you want.

Hi,

I have tried running other command line tools and that works fine.

The Team Foundation build agent has an option to run as a "interactive service" (really just a console application). When I do this miabuild.exe does not hang. This is the workaround I am currently using. However it is not optimal as it requires a user to be logged on to the build machine.

More and more build tools (TFS, FinalBuilder etc.) are making server editions that are supposed to run as a service. I think its important that IA can handle this in the future.

Anyway, I hope to get some time in the comming weeks to upgrade to IA latest version and then I will make a small example project exposing the problem and upload it.

Cheers, Lars

Hi I have the exact same problem here...
I am trying to trigger miabuild.exe from an administrator website so basically it is called using "Network Service" as a user and it seems that this hangs the miabuild process.

Do you have any idea how I could solve this without having a user to log in all the time?
Thanks
