MDAC 2.8 SP1 detection on Windows 7

Hi,
I'm using Installaware 10.10, and i made an installer which detects and installs MDAC 2.8 SP1.
The MDAC is Installaware plugin, and by opening it, "Check/Install MDAC refresh" plugin checks which version is installed.
The installer tries to install MDAC (2.81.1132.0) and fails because there is already a newer version (6.1.7601.17514). The Installer should not try to install MDAC in the first place.
My question is:
Does the MDAC plugin reads only the registry entry to find what version is installed (ie:HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\DataAccess\FullInstallVer )?
An old post was refering to " we use OLE automation to create a adodb.connection object and read its version. When checking for just the runtime, we read the DLL version number from System\\Ole DB\\oledb32.dll."

Is it still the case ?
Best regards,
