MDAC 2.8 SP1 detection on Windows 7

Post by abdou24 »

Hi,

I'm using Installaware 10.10, and i made an installer which detects and installs MDAC 2.8 SP1.
The MDAC is Installaware plugin, and by opening it, "Check/Install MDAC refresh" plugin checks which version is installed.
The installer tries to install MDAC (2.81.1132.0) and fails because there is already a newer version (6.1.7601.17514). The Installer should not try to install MDAC in the first place.
My question is:
Does the MDAC plugin reads only the registry entry to find what version is installed (ie:HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\DataAccess\FullInstallVer )?

An old post was refering to " we use OLE automation to create a adodb.connection object and read its version. When checking for just the runtime, we read the DLL version number from System\\Ole DB\\oledb32.dll."

Is it still the case ?

Dear User,

Yes, I believe the MDAC plugin verifies that registry key.

Anyway, I may suggest you to verify the target OS and then decide to install the MDAC component consequently (... more recent OSes already include the component natively).
The MDAC plugin was originally designed for old OSes as WIN 2000.
You may also have a look at the following link for a list where the MDAC can be installed.

Hope this helps you.

Hi FrancescoT,

yes i'm aware that MDAC is shipped with Windows7, and the version is 6.1.7601.17514. But I'm intrigued by the fact that MDAC prerequisite from my Installer is trying to install it anyway!
I even try to fake the version number from the registry key, but it still trying to install it.

I'm lost

Dear User,

By what you said, of course those are not the parameters verified by the Plugin ... or more probably, the new OSes store this value under a different place.

But there is a thing that I don't understand, why don't you skip the MDAC installation on Win 7?
It is really simple, you only need to execute the MDAC Check Script conditionally.

Hi,

Yes i thought about skipping the prerequisite installation according to the O.S. (this is not the concern).
I was asking the question because i had a customer using my installer, and the Installer is already released, and i was trying to make it work during Runtime process.
Putting the version number through the registry to 2.81.1132.0 is not making the installer to skip MDAC installation.

Dear User,

I'll check with our dev team about the verified parameters used by MDAC plugin.

Anyway, It is only a personal opinion ...but I may suggest you to distribute an update of your package to solve similar issues, instead of altering the customer's OS.

Hi,

The information about the MDAC plugin will be really appreciate.
Releasing a custom installer will take time (because it had to be certify, test, ... the process is too long to release a new custom installer).
I'm looking for some informations on how to debug the issue during Runtime.

Thanks,
