I need UAC elevation and manual update checking.
I've created an installer with manual update checking, and also selected "Always Elevate" for Vista UAC Elevation drop-down. Problem is that everytime I want to check for updates and launch the updater shortcut I get the UAC prompt. Is there a way to avoid UAC until an update is detected?
Thanks,
Dawid

What you can do is compile a separate web update client and use that instead of the one that is built into setup.exe. That way you can specify no elevation for that different compile.

Hi,
I'm still evaluating InstallAware, and creating a POC. I'm not sure what you mean by "existing code" I was not able to find any c# or vb.net code in your installation.
Also, I'm considering another route. I want to download and parse the .ini file to see if there are updates. If so, I can launch the setup.exe \\update to download and install them. How can I get access to the UPDATE_SERVER variable from my app?
Many thanks,
Dawid

The existing code for the web update client is in MSIcode and included as an Include Script in your existing project. You can copy-paste that code into any project and make any changes as you see fit.
I suggest you read the web updates whitepaper if there is any confusion.

Re: Automatic updates and UAC
So i have the same problem here. is there no easier way to to that.
At moment, my Setup writes at the installation the $UNINSTALLLINK$ variable to the ini-File of my program. So i can easely check for updates in my program with a button i created. Now i wants for myself shows peridoically if a Update is ready on my update server. This should happens without calling the UAC because the user should not detect that i searching for updates. So it would be nice if there is any information about the update.ini format. Then i could check it for myself without making a extra project just for doing this.
[edit]
I readed the White paper. Parsing the update.ini should be makeable.
The idea about creating a new project and insert the update code of the existing setup project i also ok for me. But i tried it and had no success. Is there a example for doing that?

Re: Automatic updates and UAC
Dear User,
I am not quite sure if I follow your exact question.
If you are refering on how InstallAware keeps traks of updates available through "update.ini" file, it is quite easy.
Each update package available for a specific application version are stored after "[Update Packs for Versions]" entry.

A ready to use sample it is no available, but if you follow the previous reply and have a look at the "Using InstallAware to Deliver Web Updates" whitepaper, you should be able to do.The idea about creating a new project and insert the update code of the existing setup project i also ok for me.
