Upgrade Installs

Post by paulm »

Hello,

I have recently been evaluating IA9 (not in enough time to take up the 4th July Offer :( ) however, I've hit a problem with upgrading / patching and was wondering if you'd be able to advise.

Create a first install of our product (1.0).
Create the second install (1.1) - only difference is updated versions of files.

I created a patch as per the help, however if you install 1.0 then run the patch the 1.1 files are installed to the system, but if you then run the 1.1 install it wants to remove the previous version and then reinstall the same files - shouldn't the patch upgrade to 1.1 so that when you run the 1.1 setup it goes straight into maintenance mode?

However - the patching method isn't the best for us as the setups need to be uncompressed and we would have to release the original setup with the patch, however using the upgrade method means the previous version is uninstalled and the user is asked all the install questions again. Is there anyway for the second install to get the TARGETDIR and Start Folder variables from the previous install before it is removed - the theory being I could change the MSI Script to get the variables from the first install, populate them in the second install and not ask the user all the same questions again?

Also - if my install has .NET assemblies and one of these is updated in the second install, the updated version is in the source files of the setup, but I can't get the updated version to be copied to the target computer when using patching - am I missing something?

Sorry about the rather long first post :)

Hope you can help, thanks in advance

Installing a patch will not change the detected base product version - this is normal.

You can now cache uncompressed setup sources with InstallAware 9.x - so this can help eliminate the need of redistributing the original setup along with a patch, making using patches feasible once again.

If you would like to use full version installers though, check the Save/Load Feature Selections command. You can also make variable values persistent across different product versions by using the compiler variable LOADOLDDATA = TRUE.
