IA update agent bug

Postby A_Ivlev » Wed May 18, 2016 11:19 am

When I installed IA X4, I selected the option to let it check for updates automatically. I have been using that option before, and it was working fine. It offers to do that at 3 am, which is ok with me. My work PC is locked (Win+L) during the night, but the IA updater can log in on its own.

This morning, when I logged in, I found it in this state: my desktop was filled with small popups from "myahew" saying "Not enough timers available". When I dismissed all of those, there was a bunch of dialogs asking "Are you sure you want to cancel? Yes No". When I closed all those (clicking No), I discovered the IA setup already running, which then displayed the error message that it cannot complete because "Not enough timers available" and exited.

It looks like the IA update agent checked for updates during the night, found a new update and ran the installer without even asking me. And then kept asking something on a timer until it ran out of system timer resources.

This is not good. Offering to install a new update is Ok, but it should never run the installer without my permission. And if the user does not respond, popping endless dialogs and running out of resources is obviously a bug.

Dear A_Ivlev,

we are informed of such problem and this is caused by an issue with the system resources.
Unfortunately the problem is very rare and really realy difficult to reproduce ... despite of all our tries.

At any rate, if you selected to "Automatically download the updates, and install them" ... these will be automatically installed, of course.

I use the top option: "Notify me before downloading". The auto-install option is a bad idea since updating requires generating and installing a new license. So if it decided to auto-install then it's another bug.

Dear A_Ivlev,

all the various update modes are entirely based on "update" script code and not on the setup engine.
Due the fact that the script code/logic has not been modified or updated recently, I can assure you that there isn't any other additional bug.

I wasn't sure whether to start a new thread or continue this one. I was also just greeted with a bunch of those "Not enough timers available" dialogs, followed by a bunch of "Are you sure you want to cancel?" dialogs. I am running X4.

I have already been prompted to download and install X5 for a few weeks but haven't done it yet because I need to stay in sync with our build machine.

Also, I am pretty sure I selected the option "Notify me before downloading" (How do I check this?). The reason I use this option is because I have satellite internet and I have to be careful when I download large files. For me, it is not a time of day issue. Downloads go against my allotment regardless of the time of day.

Anyway, hopefully this is another data point to help you catch the problem.
