We also know this problem since month. With setups built with various IA versions.
BUT: not all computers are affected and the shortcut is removed afterwards in contrary to the error message. Maybe it has to do with some Windows updates to be installed or not, I remember I read about this in the msdn forums.

Dear Pfennig,

... sorry I'm missed it!

InstallAware 12 doesn't support naively Win 8 ...

honestly, I don't remember a possible issue with shortcut removal with IA 12 packages when used on Win 7 (I personally used the same with my projects for long time)

Windows 7 is affected as well. It hasn't always been this way, so I suppose it
has something to do with a Windows update, as alibaba mentioned.

I think you're mistaken with regard to Windows 8 support in IA 12.
It already has the option "Pin to Metro (Windows 8 and higher)"
and also lists Windows 8 and Server 8 in "Get System Setting Windows NT Kernel".

We've encountered the same issue. Let me just summarize the problem, so that other users do not have to go through the MSDN thread: the problem is caused by the Nvidia driver making the Desktop.ini files in the per-user and all-users Desktop folders read-only. MSI then fails at removing Desktop shortcuts.

Did this issue ever get resolved? I've run into the same problem with my install.

Thanks.
