InstallAware X3 needs huge space on drive C

Postby sq-rom » Thu Aug 20, 2015 2:30 am

I have tried to install InstallAware X3 trial (with Runtimes) on my PC.

The temp-Directory points to drive e:, and there is lots of space there.

I have 7,5 GB space free on drive C, still: during installation the setup eats
up all that space and states that I do not have enough space on drive C.

As I do not want to install on drive C: but on drive E: - please tell me how to proceed.

Dear Roland,

if you use the full installer with runtimes, the package can require about 15-20 GB of free disk space.
This is due all the Application runtimes included with the package.

You may alternatively use the Web Installer version or you could try to install IA from command line, using the OVERRIDECACHE pre-defined variable.
"Overriding the value of the OVERRIDECACHE variable allows changing the installer cache location".

Example; <setup.exe> OVERRIDECACHE=myoverridecachepath

Hope this helps you.

OVERRIDECACHE did not work, it still uses drive C and fails. Could you please check if this option is still fully functional?

Dear Roland,

did you use the web installer trial as suggested with my previous reply?

The IA installer, as any other installer, extracts its component into the TEMP folder defined with the system. Due its reduced boot-strap size, the Web Installer version just requires a very minimal amount of free disk space. With the web installer trial, all the features that have to be installed will be downloaded, instead to use a temporary local copy of them as it happens with the full installer with runtimes.

In addition with the web installer and during setup interview, you can also specify where all the downloaded features have to be stored, otherwise the default installer cache location will be used.

Hope this helps you.

Ok, next try:

Used the web installer. Told it to use drive E for the application and also for the cached install data.

But: it still uses drive C (in C:\ProgramData\{808CDBD7-BC02-483F-8EE3-B4EB086610D6}), where it puts loads of files. So I run out of disk space in C again.

I cannot believe that installing Installaware itself is so cumbersome... :| I am sure not the only one that has limited space on drive C...

Please come up with a solution that allows me to install full InstallAware X3 on my computer - which has 8 GB free on drive C and lots (200+) GB free on drive E.

Dear Roland,

I'll try to repeat once again.

1 - Run the WEB TRIAL PACKAGE as "<setup.exe> OVERRIDECACHE=myoverridecachepath", where "myoverridecachepath" is an existing folder NOT ON C drive (I Used "E:\myoverridecache").
2- During setup interview, specify a target directory NOT ON C drive (I used "E:\Program Files").
3- During setup interview, specify where all the downloaded features have to be stored, otherwise the default installer cache location will be used (I Used "E:\myWebBlocks").

I just tried the above steps and works fine.
Installing ALL INSTALLAWARE FEATURES, the setup ONLY used "266 MB" on my C system drive.

I hope this finally clarifies all your doubt.

Is there a solution for users without access to the internet? I cannot run the WebInstaller.

According to the installation dialog during "InstallAware_X3_With_Runtimes.exe" the space required is 15,755MB.
In fact, I see the following:
15,755MB is under C:\ProgramData after install and restart
15,755MB is under C:\Program Files (x86)

I do not see this behavior on computers with InstallAware 18 which were installed using the offline installer.

Thank you,
Tod

Dear Tod,

nothing is changed respect the previous IA versions.

What is changed of course, it's the number of application runtimes included with package and this is the reason why you found such differences.

Alternatively, you can run the Web-Installer on a different machine (where an Internet connection is available), having care to specify where to store the downloaded features (as described at #3 of my previous reply).

Finally copy such folder on a pen drive and then from the same pen drive, install IA on the other machine.

hope this helps you.
