Windows 8 error message on uninstall

Postby michaels » Mon Nov 05, 2012 12:41 pm

I just upgraded to Installaware 15 on Windows 8 and I have run into the same error message I encountered on Windows 7 with Installaware 9 builds, when attempting to uninstall an application. When uninstalling, installaware presents the following message shown below when it is attempting to remove the shortcuts. After uninstallation is complete it appears the shortcuts have been removed on the desktop but they haven't been. You can press F5 on the desktop to refresh and the shortcuts will appear. Shortcuts are removed on the metro interface, but still remain on the Windows desktop.

Any ideas?

Dear Michaels,

I have executed a quick test using an already builded package that I have and with this, it works fine.

Let me verify replicating your exact shoutcut settings and I will be back to you as soon as possible.

Regards.

Okay, thanks. If my shortcuts are not set up correctly let me know and I'll change them.

Alternatively, if you have a sample build I can examine to see how your shortcuts are set up that would help. All I need is for the shortcuts to display on the desktop and shortcut folder and to pin to the Windows 8 desktop. Pretty straightforward stuff in terms of how I am using them, so not sure what is wrong as we didn't encounter this message in Windows 7 with the same installers, just under Windows 8.

More info for you. FYI, I just created a brand new test project with using Quickstart. I installed a single .exe file as part of the installer/project and I didn't change any shortcut settings, just used the defaults for the entire project. I encountered the same error. I'll upload the project if you need to see it.

Just tested it on another Windows 8 computer and it worked, so it's specific to this computer. I did a little bit of research and discovered it might be profile related, so I'm going to dig a little deeper and see if we solve it by recreating a new profile on this PC.

The issue is caused specifically by the 'desktop' shortcuts set up as part of the project in the Shortcuts section. If you remove all shortcuts related to $DESKTOPDIR$ and install using shortcuts in the $SHORTCUTFOLDER$ then the problem does not occur. See example below of working set up.

Any ideas?

Dear Michaels,

I have just used a Desktop shortcut with my project and works fine on Win 8 rtm.
With my shortcut I have replicated your exact settings ... so I don't know.

I'm using IA 15.02 with my test.

Here's an example of $DESKTOPDIR$ shortcut that causes the error. It doesn't seem to matter if I specify a Startup in Folder, Admin privileges, pinning, etc. It will always cause the Warning 1910 error message regardless of the options selected.

Is it possible there is something wrong with the registry values/settings that are written/removed on install/uninstall? Seems peculiar as this PC is Win 8 Pro, same as the other Win 8 PC we tested, and the only major difference is that it is logged in using a Windows account set as 'Network Admin', whereas the other user is 'Domain User'. Accounts seem not to matter as we logged in on both PCs using various accounts and problems still occured on the PC with errors, regardless of the account. Both computers have no security software, etc. as they are test computers so we can rule that out.

I have done the same and works fine.

I have tried everythings ... with or without pinning options.

I don't think that can be caused by the account or domain settings.

I am really out of ideas.

I can't find any info on the problem, so who knows. Probably just another 'Windows' bug. For now I'll just live with it and if I discover anything further I'll post a solution here. Nobody appears to have an answers and very little info on the web on 'Warning 1910' when uninstalling. Thanks for your help.

Dear Michaels,

By the way, I really suppose that WIN 8 have some bugs with shortcuts ... and not the only one.

Just a question, have you tried creating a test project from scratch?

We're getting the same error message when it comes to uninstalling the desktop icon on all our Windows 7 and 8 machines, and customers report this as well.

After clicking OK the icon gets removed nonetheless. So, it's quite a nuisance.

Where working with InstallAware 12.
